Sometimes connection doesn’t require words. Sometimes it comes with four paws and a wagging tail.
For older adults, meaningful connection can become increasingly important as routines change, mobility decreases, or opportunities for social interaction become less frequent. Therapy dogs can provide another wonderful way to encourage companionship, engagement and moments of simple joy.
A visit from a calm, well-trained therapy dog can spark conversation, bring back memories of beloved pets, encourage interaction and simply brighten someone’s day. For a senior living with dementia, the familiar experience of petting a dog may also provide a comforting and enjoyable way to connect in the moment.
Therapy dogs are different from service dogs. Rather than being trained to perform specific tasks for one person with a disability, therapy dogs and their handlers are trained to safely interact with many different people in settings such as senior communities, hospitals and community programs.
At CareOne Senior Care, connection has always been an important part of how we think about care. That’s why we’re developing our new Comfort & Connection Canine Program.
Our newest little team member will begin an extensive journey from puppy training and obedience to advanced manners and therapy-dog preparation—with the goal of one day making special visits with seniors and participating in CareOne community outreach.
We’re excited to share that journey with you.
Because sometimes the best connection comes with four paws. 🐾
